Founding
The Grey Lantern corps was founded on the idea of a perfect peacekeeper for the Lantern Cores. Their guardian, Shalloc, was victim to Red Lantern and Yellow lantern fighting. Then, with broken heart and mind set on peace, he made strides to create the corps of Determination. However, he didn't want them to be weakened by the Emotional Spectrum of Yellow/Fear, Red/Rage or Orange/Avarice unlike Green/Will is. Several other guardians helped him, but ultimately did not join him, seeing his search for peace as a folly. Shalloc proceeded anyway. The guardian made his way to Aherah, the future home of the Grey a lantern Corps.
Carefully Shalloc created the power battery, crafting rings upon rings, one hundred in total. However, before he could continue any further, a red lantern named Ruthaan led an assault on the grey lantern home world, thinking it a simple village planet.
Shallocs Stand
The guardian sent as many rings as he could to find an owner, desperately searching for aid against the red lanterns. In a move to secure the Grey Lantern rings and power battery, Shalloc sealed the door behind him and fought the red lanterns outside. There were seventeen red lanterns in total, who attacked one at a time at first to wear the guardian down. Continuously beating him down and letting him back up. Finally Ruthaan grabbed hold of the guardian's throat and charged a red construct around the guardian, throwing him like a boy throws a baseball. The guardian slammed into the planet below near the entrance, passing out from the damage to his body.
Ruthaan and his red lanterns investigate, and when they could not bash the door down they left the planet as a dying one, after scarring her surface and then sending a large construct down to its core to disrupt it.
The First Grey Lantern
Along a well beaten sidewalk, a young man, aged 22, staggered away from a car crash. He had a large gash in the side of his head, what looked like a broken left leg and a severely bloodied chest. He stumbled, but continued. The mans parents were counting on him, and his sister too. But his mind was becoming foggy, the blood loss was kicking in. The mans pace slowed as time passed, but he pressed on. No authorities had been called yet, since they were outside a construction area outside Millville Minnesota. He collapsed on the ground, eyes blurry. He reached out with his right hand toward a glowing light, his thoughts changing from help to death.
At least then, he would be with his family...he was all ready to give up, but, somewhere deep inside his heart he felt that this was a terrible end, an end to his family's line. The Volgens had ancestry going back to the crusades, the young mans hand clenched tightly then relaxed as he tried to pull himself up. He repeated the same thing over and over in his mind. 'I will not die here. I will not, die. I can't die.'
suddenly he felt a surge of energy through his body as a strange object latched onto his finger. He spoke the words "In brightest day......In darkest night......Grey storms can still ignite.......Where Injustice is done.......My light will fight.....Grey lanterns might!" The grey light enveloped him and suddenly he was lifted off at a high speed towards outer space.
His is name is David Volgen, first and only Grey Lantern.
