Hal Jordan was apart of the American Air Force unit : The Blackhawks, but after an accident in mid flight he was excommunicated back to his hometown of Coast City,CA. Many months later Hal Jordan gets a job at the military/commercial airline Ferris Air as a test pilot. After the the battle of Corto Maltese (B-0 vs Superman) The UN decided once more to revamp an old military sector group which was last commissioned back in the Vietnam War codenamed: The Green Lantern Army Division, which eventually recruited Hal to its ranks and now patrols his city sector : 2814
