A Lieutenant Colonel in the Soviet Air Force, Anya Savenlovich was chosen to be part of the top secret Project Helios. Launched into Earth orbit in 1964, the cosmonaut reported an explosion in the second stage rockets and would not be heard from again for the next thirty-five years. Adrift in space, Savenlovich and her capsule were frozen keeping her alive for the intervening years.

While in orbit Superman and Kyle Rayner detected Savenlovich's distress signal and rescued the cosmonaut. After she was thawed out, the news of her long hibernation came as quite a shock to her. Anya was given a power suit and agreed to join with Rayner and others of G.L.A.D..
